How to make a ringtone

  1. Drop a song into the box above, or click Choose files. MP3, M4A, WAV and the sound of MP4 or MOV videos all work.

  2. Drag the handles on the waveform to the part you want, or type the times, and press play to check it. It starts at 29 seconds, the most an iPhone takes.

  3. Choose your phone: iPhone gets an M4R file (under 30 seconds), Android an MP3. Fades in and out are on, so it doesn't start or stop abruptly.

  4. Click Make ringtone and download it. On an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, open the file, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone; other ways are described below.

Why make your own ringtone?

Your favourite part of a song is rarely its first 30 seconds, and ringtone apps are full of ads or ask for a subscription. Cutting it yourself takes a minute and costs nothing.

A ringtone should be short and start where the song is recognisable. A gentle fade in keeps the first ring from startling you, and a fade out makes the loop back to the start smooth.

iPhone and Android ringtones

iPhones only take ringtones as M4R files, which are AAC audio like M4A, and shorter than 30 seconds: a longer one is refused as too large. Android phones use an ordinary MP3 of any length.

On iPhone with iOS 26 or later, open the downloaded file, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone; on older iOS, import it into GarageBand and use Share → Ringtone, or drag it onto the phone in Finder on a Mac or iTunes on Windows. On Android, open Settings → Sound → Ringtone and pick the MP3, or save it to the Ringtones folder first.

Is it safe?

Yes. Ringtone Maker runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.

You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.

Your song is cut and encoded in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so it works with voice notes and recordings you'd rather keep private.

Files stay in this tab's memory only until you remove them or close the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a ringtone be?

Under 30 seconds on iPhone, which refuses longer ringtones as too large, so the selection stops at 29. Android has no limit, but a call rarely rings for more than 30 seconds anyway.

How do I set it as my ringtone on iPhone?

On iOS 26 and later: open the downloaded M4R, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone. On older iOS: save it to Files, open GarageBand, import it into a new project, then tap Share → Ringtone and Use sound as → Standard Ringtone. With a computer, you can also drag the file onto your iPhone in Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows).

Can I make a ringtone from a video?

Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video and its sound is used; the picture is left out.

Can I use it as a notification or alarm sound?

Yes. On iPhone, ringtones added this way also appear under text tones and alarms. On Android, pick the file under Notification sound or in the Clock app.

What's the difference with the MP3 cutter?

The same editor, set up for ringtones: it starts with 29 seconds and fades, and can save an M4R for iPhone. Use the MP3 cutter to trim a song to any length as an MP3.
