Is it safe?
Yes. PNG to AVIF runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.
You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.
The new file is created from the image's pixels only, so EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied into it.

Does AVIF keep the transparent background?
Yes. AVIF has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas in your PNG stay transparent in the AVIF.
How much smaller are AVIF files than PNG?
Photos saved as PNG often shrink by 80% or more. Flat graphics, logos and screenshots shrink less, and sometimes a PNG is already small. The result shows the exact size change for every file.
Which quality setting is best for graphics and screenshots?
70% suits most images. For screenshots and graphics with small text, raise it to 85–90% to keep edges sharp, and check the result in the comparison view.
Why does the first AVIF conversion take a moment to start?
No browser can create AVIF files on its own, so an AVIF encoder (about 1 MB to download) is loaded the first time you convert and then runs on your device. Encoding AVIF is also more work than JPG or WebP: a large photo can take a few seconds.
Can every browser show AVIF images?
Every current version of Chrome, Edge and Firefox displays AVIF, and so does Safari from version 16.4 on iPhone, iPad and Mac. For older browsers, serve the AVIF with a fallback using the HTML picture element.
