How to upscale an image
Drop JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC pictures into the box above, or click Choose files.
Choose 2× for photos that are almost big enough, or 4× for small ones like thumbnails and old web images.
Click Upscale images. The first time, the AI model (5 MB) is downloaded once and kept in your browser.
Compare each result with the original side by side, then download it.
Why upscale with AI?
Stretching a small picture in an editor spreads each pixel over several, so it comes out soft and blocky. An upscaling model has learned what edges, hair, fabric and text look like, and draws them in at the larger size.
It helps with thumbnails and images saved from the web, old phone photos, pictures for print, and datasets for training AI models that need every image at 512 or 1024 pixels.
What to expect
Edges and textures come out crisp and compression blocks are smoothed away. Detail that isn't in the picture at all, such as the text on a sign too small to read, can't be recovered; the model makes a plausible guess, so check faces and writing.
The model runs on your graphics card where the browser allows it (WebGPU), taking seconds. Otherwise it runs on the processor, which is much slower, so large pictures are brought down first; the result says so.
| Choice | Result | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 2× | Twice as wide and tall | Photos that are almost big enough |
| 4× | Four times as wide and tall | Thumbnails, icons and small web images |
Is it safe?
Yes. AI Image Upscaler runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.
You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.
Pictures are enlarged in your browser and never uploaded. The model is downloaded from our own server and kept in your browser for next time.
Files stay in this tab's memory only until you remove them or close the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no watermark and no credits: up to 500 pictures at a time, as often as you like.
Which model is used?
Real-ESRGAN's compact general model (realesr-general-x4v3), an open model for real-world photos. It runs with ONNX Runtime in your browser.
Why does it take long on my computer?
Your browser couldn't use the graphics card, so the model runs on the processor. Use the latest Chrome or Edge for WebGPU, or upscale smaller pictures.
What happens to transparent PNGs?
They stay transparent: the colours are enlarged by the model and the transparency is scaled up smoothly. PNG and WebP pictures come out as PNG, photos as high-quality JPG.
Can I enlarge images for AI training?
Yes. Upscale small images here first, then bring the whole set to 512×512 or 1024×1024 with Bulk crop & resize.
