How to add page numbers to a PDF
Drop your PDFs into the box above, or click Choose files. Several PDFs are numbered one by one.
Choose where the numbers go (bottom centre is the usual place) and how they read: 3, 3 / 10 or Page 3.
Set the first number if it isn't 1, and tick Skip the first page to leave a cover unnumbered.
Click Add numbers and download the numbered PDF.
Why add page numbers?
A table of contents, a printed stack or a comment like "see page 12" only works when the pages are numbered. PDFs made by merging, scanning or exporting slides often have none.
Numbering the file itself means everyone sees the same numbers, on screen and on paper, whichever viewer they use.
What changes in the PDF
Only the numbers are added, as real text on top of each page. The pages themselves aren't re-drawn: text stays selectable, links and bookmarks keep working, and the file grows by a few kilobytes.
Pages that are turned sideways get their number upright, in the same place as the reader sees the page.
Is it safe?
Yes. Add Page Numbers runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.
You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.
The PDF is numbered in your browser and never uploaded.
Files stay in this tab's memory only until you remove them or close the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the first number, for example 5 for a chapter that continues another document. Numbers carry on from there.
How do I leave the cover page without a number?
Tick Skip the first page. The cover stays blank and numbering starts on the second page, with the number you chose.
Can the number say “Page 3 of 10”?
Choose the 3 / 10 style for the number with the total, or Page 3 for the word and the number.
Can I number several PDFs at once?
Yes. Each PDF is numbered on its own, starting from your first number, and you can download them all as a ZIP.
Will the numbers cover my text?
They sit about a centimetre from the edge, where most documents leave a margin. If yours has text there, pick the other edge or a corner.
