Why convert AVIF to JPG?
More and more websites serve images as AVIF because the files are small. When you save one, you get a .avif file that plenty of software can't open yet: some photo editors, older versions of Windows and Office, messaging apps and many upload forms only take JPG or PNG.
JPG is the most widely supported image format there is, so converting gives you a file that works with every app, printer and online service.
Every current browser can read AVIF, so the conversion uses your browser's own decoder: there's nothing extra to download, and nothing is uploaded.
AVIF vs JPG
AVIF compresses far better than JPG and can store transparency and animation. JPG can do neither, but decades of universal support mean it opens everywhere.
Converting AVIF to JPG trades file size for compatibility: the JPG is usually several times larger. Transparent areas are filled with a solid colour (white by default), and an animated AVIF is saved using its first frame.

Is it safe?
Yes. AVIF to JPG runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.
You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.
The new file is created from the image's pixels only, so EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied into it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?
AVIF is much newer than JPG and PNG. Browsers display it, but a lot of other software doesn't open it yet, and on Windows the Photos app needs Microsoft's free AV1 Video Extension. Converting to JPG avoids the problem everywhere.
Why is the JPG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses much more efficiently, so the same image usually takes several times more space as a JPG. That's the price of a file every app can open.
What happens to the transparent parts of an AVIF?
JPG can't store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a background colour: white by default, or any colour you pick in the settings. To keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
What JPG quality should I pick?
90%, the default, looks the same as the AVIF for almost every image. Lower values give smaller files; below about 70% blocky artefacts can start to show in smooth areas.
Does it need to download anything first?
No. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later all read AVIF themselves, so the conversion starts right away and runs on your device.
