How to cut an MP3

  1. Drop an MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG or FLAC file into the box above. A video (MP4 or MOV) works too: its sound is used.

  2. Drag the start and end handles on the waveform, or type the times. Play the selection to check it.

  3. Turn on the fades if you want the sound to come in and out gently, as ringtones do.

  4. Click Cut MP3 and download the result.

Why cut audio?

A ringtone or alarm is usually the best 20 or 30 seconds of a song. Cutting it out, with a short fade at each end, gives you a tone that starts at the right moment.

Recordings often need trimming too: the silence before a voice memo starts, the end of a lecture after the speaker stops, or one answer from a long interview.

Here the file is cut in your browser, so private recordings and unreleased music never leave your device.

What happens to the sound

The selected part is decoded and saved as a new MP3 at the bitrate you choose. At 192 kbps or more you won't hear a difference from the original; 320 kbps is the best MP3 can do.

Cuts are accurate to a tenth of a second. Fades are two seconds long, or a quarter of the selection when it's shorter than eight seconds.

Is it safe?

Yes. MP3 Cutter runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.

You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.

Audio is decoded and encoded by your browser, using its built-in media engine and a WebAssembly MP3 encoder. Recordings, voice memos and interviews never leave your device.

Files stay in this tab's memory only until you remove them or close the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a ringtone?

Select the part you want (the 30 s button makes the selection 30 seconds long), turn on both fades, and cut. On Android, pick the MP3 as your ringtone in Settings → Sound, or copy it to the Ringtones folder.

Can I use it as an iPhone ringtone?

iPhones only take ringtones in their own format. Import the MP3 into GarageBand on your iPhone and share the project as a ringtone; it then appears in Settings → Sounds.

How precise is the cut?

To a tenth of a second. Type the times, or select a handle and move it with the arrow keys: 0.1 seconds per press, one second with Shift.

Can I cut the sound of a video?

Yes. Add an MP4 or MOV video: its sound is cut and saved as an MP3, and the picture is left out.

Does cutting lower the quality?

The selection is saved as a new MP3, which is very slightly lossy. At 192 kbps or more that's inaudible; choose 320 kbps for the best copy.

Is there a file size limit?

Each file can be up to 500 MB. Files are read from disk in small pieces, so long recordings don't need to fit in memory.
