How to remove the background from a photo

  1. Drop JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or AVIF photos into the box above, or click Choose files.

  2. Click Remove background. The first time, the AI model (about 100 MB) is downloaded once and kept in your browser.

  3. Compare the cutout with the original side by side and zoom in to check the edges.

  4. Download the transparent PNGs one by one, or all at once as a ZIP.

Why remove the background?

A clean cutout puts the subject on its own: a product photo on a white or coloured page, a portrait for a profile picture or ID, a pet or a person dropped into a new scene, a logo or sticker without its box.

Most background removers upload your photo to a server and give back a low-resolution preview unless you pay or sign up. Here the model runs in your browser, so the photo stays on your device and the result keeps the full resolution of the original.

The model is BiRefNet, an open-source AI model built for separating a subject from its surroundings. It handles hair, fur and fine edges far better than simple colour-based tools.

What works well, and what doesn't

It works best when there's one clear subject: a person, an animal, a product or an object, in reasonable light. Hair, fur, whiskers and the gaps between fingers or chair legs usually come out cleanly.

It struggles when the subject and the background look alike, with glass and other see-through objects, and in busy scenes where it isn't obvious what the subject is. Use the comparison view to check the edges at full size before you use the cutout.

Is it safe?

Yes. Remove Background runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.

You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.

The AI model is downloaded from our own server and runs entirely in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded, and nothing about them is sent anywhere.

Files stay in this tab's memory only until you remove them or close the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the first background removal take longer?

The first time, your browser downloads the AI model, about 100 MB, and keeps it for next time. After that, each photo usually takes a few seconds on a recent computer or phone. Older devices without WebGPU are slower.

Are my photos uploaded to remove the background?

No. The AI model runs in your browser, on your device. Your photos never leave it, which also means there's no waiting in a queue and no resolution limit imposed by a server.

What resolution is the cutout?

The same as your photo. The model works out the outline from a smaller copy, and the mask is scaled back up and applied to your original, so the PNG keeps its full size. Very large photos may be scaled down to fit your browser's limits.

Why is the result a PNG?

PNG can store transparency, so the background really is empty rather than white. You can place the cutout on any colour or image in an editor, a slide or a design tool. JPG can't store transparency.

Which photos work best?

Photos with one clear subject: people, pets, products and objects, reasonably lit and in focus. Glass, subjects that blend into the background and crowded scenes are harder. Check the edges in the comparison view.

Can I remove the background from several photos at once?

Yes. Add up to 500 photos, each up to 50 MB, and download the cutouts one by one or together as a ZIP.
