Why convert AVIF to PNG?
PNG is the right choice when an AVIF has a transparent background, such as a logo, sticker or product cut-out: it keeps the transparency, which JPG can't.

Is it safe?
Yes. AVIF to PNG runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and converted by your own device using built-in browser technology, so they are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them.
You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. No upload requests are made.
The new file is created from the image's pixels only, so EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied into it.

Does the PNG keep the AVIF's transparent background?
Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas stay exactly as they are in the AVIF.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the AVIF?
AVIF discards detail that's hard to see to keep files small; PNG stores every pixel exactly. A photo can easily be ten times larger as a PNG. That's normal and doesn't mean anything went wrong.
When is AVIF to JPG the better choice?
For photos without transparency that you want to share, email or upload. The JPG will be much smaller than a PNG and still opens everywhere.
Is any quality lost when converting AVIF to PNG?
No further quality is lost: the PNG stores the image exactly as it's decoded from the AVIF. It can't add back detail the AVIF's own compression removed.
