Privacy

The short version: most tools never see your files at all, the few that do delete them immediately, and we don't need to know who you are.

Tools that run in your browser

All image, PDF, audio and video tools on PocketConvert run entirely in your browser. The files you add are processed on your device and are never uploaded to our servers or anyone else's. We can't see them, store them or share them, because we never receive them. These pages show “Your files never leave your device”.

Some tools download what they need the first time you use them, such as the HEIC decoder, the language data for Image to text (2 to 3 MB), the AI model for the Image upscaler (5 MB) or the one for Remove background (about 100 MB). These downloads come from our own server, contain no data about you or your files, and are kept in your browser for next time.

If you install PocketConvert as an app and share files to it from another app (on Android, Share → PocketConvert), the files are handed to the app inside your browser and opened on your device. They aren't uploaded, and they're cleared as soon as the page has picked them up.

Tools that use our server

Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF (LibreOffice), PDF to Word (pdf2docx) and Compress PDF (PyMuPDF) need software that can't run in a browser. For these tools only, your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our server in the European Union, converted, and deleted as soon as the result is sent back to you. Files are never stored, shared or used for anything else, and the server keeps no access logs of who converted what. These pages show “Encrypted upload, deleted right after conversion” instead.

Usage statistics

We record anonymous events such as “a JPG to WebP conversion of 3 files completed in 2 seconds” to understand which tools are useful. When a file is turned away, the event says why and gives its type, such as “AVI”, but never its name. When a conversion fails, the event also says what went wrong, for example “this browser couldn't decode AAC audio”. If you answer “Did this do the job?” after a conversion, your yes or no is recorded the same way. After a no you can also pick what went wrong and write a few words; that comment is the only text we record, it’s sent only when you press Send, and e-mail addresses and long numbers in it are blanked out. These events never include file names, file contents, image metadata or anything else about your files.

Page visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and doesn’t track you across sites. It sees which page was opened, the referring site and how fast the page loaded.

These events and page views are sent, through our own server, to PostHog on its servers in the European Union. It runs without cookies or browser storage, so it can't recognise you on a later visit. Along with the page address it sees the campaign tags in the link you followed (for example “utm_source=google” when you arrive from one of our ads) and your approximate country.

Accounts and cookies

There are no accounts. The site stores only a few preferences in your browser: your light or dark theme, the language you picked, and that you closed the “come back” card shown after a conversion. While files are open or converting, that tab also keeps a short note: which tool, how many files and their rough total size (never a name or contents). It is removed when the page closes normally; if the page crashes for lack of memory, it is sent to us when the page opens again, then removed. Closing the tab removes it anyway.
